Mark was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland on 4 October 1973. He lived most of his early life in the small but beatiful town of Banchory near Aberdeen.

His undergraduate days were spent at the University of Edinburgh. While his studies focused mainly on applied optics and solid-state electronics, he continued to develop his interest in computing. He also spent two summers working for BT developing software and writing QMS documentation.

He graduated with first class honours in Electronics and Physics in June 1995.

Mark is currently working towards a PhD in the Department of Physics at Heriot-Watt University. His primary research interest is the application of optoelectronic devices to optical processing and routing.

His outside interests include playing the guitar, amateur radio and skiing.

Mark's EPCC project involved parallel techniques for optical character recognition.
